They are more than 20 species of ant that may infest homes that are encountered in NJ. The most common types are:

• Odorous house ants – House ants will create large above ground colonies adjacent to one another, nesting under compost and other stationary objects.  Homes surrounded by wooded areas are prone to infestation yearly. These pests will also nest inside homes and will inundate kitchen counters and garbage cans seeking sweet food or spilled liquids.
• Pavement ants – These are dark brown to blackish, and one-eighth inch long. They will eat almost anything, including insects, seeds, honeydew, honey, bread, meats, nuts, ice cream and cheese.
• Field ants - Field ants are one of the most common ants seen outdoors, particularly when they swarm in the fall to mate. Field ants feed primarily on honeydew from aphids, mealy bugs, and other plant pests. They are more commonly found in gardens and can damage and kill landscape plants.

Ants usually come into buildings to find a source of moisture or food. These nuisance insects will often enter a home through cracks around windows or doors, but they have the ability to find many other small openings to enter your home or building. When a worker ant finds a source of food they go back to the colony, leaving a chemical trail for other ants to follow. A large number of ants will swarm a food source in a very short period of time. Once inside, if they establish a nest, the growing ant colony can become a problem quickly, as ants develop from juveniles to adults within a matter of a few days.
