Silverfish

Silverfish are ¾ inch in length, with a slender, tear-drop shaped flat body covered in silvery, dark gray scales.

Silverfish must have humidity to survive. They like the moist, warm areas in homes and are typically found in kitchen cupboards, basements, laundry rooms, attics and under bathroom sinks. They also like dark places and are found active at night or in dark places during the daytime. They are especially attracted to paper and damp clothing. They are commonly found in stored boxes in garages and sheds.

Although silverfish have a creepy appearance, they do not bite and do not carry disease. Silverfish feed on carbohydrates, particularly sugars and starches. Cellulose, shampoos, glue in books, linen, silk and dead insects may be food sources.

The appearance of silverfish can be reduced by installing dehumidifiers, correcting moisture concerns and sealing gaps where plumbing lines emerge from walls. Treatment for a silverfish infestation needs to address the adult silverfish, the site of their eggs and the food source. Buggin’ Us Pest Control will take care of all this for you so the silverfish infestation is completely taken care of.
