Fleas

Fleas

Fleas are tiny insects (1/16 to 1/8 inch) with flat, wingless bodies and long jumping legs, that are dark brown in color and reddish black when they are filled with blood. These insects feed on the blood of humans and animals, including cats, dogs, squirrels, raccoons and many other animals. They are often brought into the home on shoes, clothes or blankets.

Fleas can live for about 100 days during which time the female will produce hundreds of offspring. They can jump and move to a new host to find a new source of blood.  Their bites commonly cause painful, itchy red bumps and can cause an allergic reaction. Fleas also are transmitters of serious disease so it is important to get rid of them when an infestation is found.

Fleas’ small size make them difficult to see. But there are things you can do to try to get rid of fleas or avoid them entirely. Clean and vacuum frequently to remove fleas and prevent them from laying eggs. Keeping lawns trimmed will help avoid rodent infestation. Preventative treatment of dogs and cats can go a long way toward avoiding fleas in the home in the first place.

Often professional help is needed for flea infestation to be sure both the fleas and the eggs are removed. Buggin’ Us Pest Control will devise a complete, effective plan to rid your home of this infestation.
